March 20,2007- 'Smarty Jones Classic' Tops Big Pennsy-Bred Slate by Tom LaMarra Date Posted: March 20, 2007 Bloodhorse.com An expanded 33-event stakes schedule headed by the inaugural $125,000 “Smarty Jones Classic” at Philadelphia Park Casino & Racetrack will be offered this year by the Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association. The PHBA, which administers the Pennsylvania-bred program for Thoroughbreds in the Keystone State, recently announced a stakes schedule worth $2.35 million. The stakes will be held at Philly Park, Penn National Race Course, and Presque Isle Downs, which is scheduled to open Sept. 1 near Erie. The Smarty Jones Classic, named in honor of the Pennsylvania-bred colt that won the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) and Preakness Stakes (gr. I) and just fell short of a Triple Crown in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I) in 2004, heads the July 28 “Pennsylvania’s Day at the Races” at Philly Park. The PHBA has scheduled eight state-bred stakes that afternoon for 3-year-olds and up on the dirt and turf. Another state-bred stakes day is set for Sept. 29 at Presque Isle. Six $90,000 events for 3-year-olds and 3-year-olds and up will be offered at the track owned and operated by MTR Gaming. There are four state-bred stakes for 2-year-olds on the calendar. The first, the High Yield Stakes for 2-year-old males, is scheduled for Sept. 29 at Philly Park. The $75,000 Pennsylvania Nursery Stakes, which was won by Smarty Jones and last year by current Triple Crown contender Hard Spun, is slated for Nov. 24 at Philly Park. Penn National, whose grandstand/clubhouse is being rebuilt this year, was awarded five Pennsylvania-bred stakes, including the Oct. 18 Blue Mountain Juvenile Stakes. Many of the PHBA stakes are named after Pennsylvania-breds; one of the new ones, the Willy Wank Stakes, honors the popular horse that won nine stakes at Keystone Race Track (now Philly Park) from 1981-84. The Willy Wank will be run, however, at Presque Isle. The expanded stakes slate was made possible by slot machines that began operating at Philly Park late last year and Presque Isle in late February. Purses and breed development receive 12% of gross slots revenue and up to 6% more from non-track slots casinos that have yet to be built.
MARCH 20, 2007 : STAKES PURSES MORE THAN DOUBLED IN PENNSYLVANIA By JOE DeVIVO
The impact of slots money is clearly evident in Philadelphia Park's 2007 stakes schedule. Not only has the number of stakes the Bensalem, Pa., track will present this season nearly doubled from a year ago, from 20 to 35, but also the cumulative purses for added-money events rose 142 percent, from $1.77million to $4.28 million. Among the most significant changes in the schedule are two new $100,000 stakes, 11 additional stakes for Pennsylvania-breds, a six-figure race named in honor of 2004 Kentucky Derby winner Smarty Jones, and a $200,000 stakes designed as a prep for fillies and mares pointing to the new Breeders' Cup race for female sprinters. Earlier this year, Philly Park announced that its premier event, the Grade 2 Pennsylvania Derby, would be worth $1 million for the first time and the Grade 2 Fitz Dixon Cotillion Handicap for 3-year-old fillies was moving to Sept. 22 with a purse of $500,000. Most of the statebred stakes received a $10,000 purse boost to $60,000. One exception is the $125,000 Smarty Jones Classic, a 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-olds-and-up that will be among eight stakes on the Pennsylvania Day at the Races program on July 28. Previously, there were only six statebred stakes on the card. In addition to the Smarty Jones, the other new stakes is the $100,000 Northern Fling Handicap for fillies and mares going six furlongs. Two established open races for females, the $100,000 My Juliet, previously run in June, and the $75,000 Steve Van Buren Handicap on Labor Day, have been combined into the six-furlong, $200,000 My Juliet Breeders' Cup on Sept. 29. The revised My Juliet is designed as a stepping-stone for horses pointing to the Breeders' Cup at Monmouth Park a month later.
Benefits Of Slots: $17.5M for purses in less than 3 months by Tom LaMarra From Jan. 1 through mid-March, slot machines at four racetracks in Pennsylvania had taken in $1.57 billion in bets and produced roughly $17.5 million for purses and breed development for horse racing based on Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board statistics. The year-to-date leader was Philadelphia Park Casino & Racetrack, which opened last December, with $632 million in bets. Harrah’s Chester Downs, a harness facility, was next in line at $449 million, but it opened in late January. Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs, another harness track that opened last fall, had $352 million in gross slots wagers. Finally Presque Isle Downs, which opened March 1 for gaming only, was at $141.9 million after only three weeks. Under the state’s Race Horse Development and Gaming Act, 12% of adjusted gross revenue from slots at racetracks goes toward purses and breed development programs for Thoroughbred and Standardbred racing. Based on that percentage and total gross terminal revenue of $145.8 million, more than $17.5 million was generated so far this year. Under the formula, Philly Park produced about $6.6 million for purses and breed development; Chester Downs, whose live meet doesn’t meet begin until June, about $5.1 million; Pocono Downs, which opens for live racing March 31, about $4.1 million; and Presque Isle, where live Thoroughbred racing will debut Sept. 1, about $1.58 million. The numbers show the slots dynamic of haves and have-nots--just in Pennsylvania. For instance, Pocono Downs, which opened for harness racing in the 1960s, will offer an all-time-high $100,000 a day in purses for its upcoming meet. The minimum purse on the first condition sheet is $4,000 for $5,000 claimers; the highest purse is $20,000 for open-class events. Meanwhile, at Penn National Race Course, Thoroughbreds for the first 25 racing days of this year competed for daily average purses of $71,000. Penn National is licensed for slots, but owner Penn National Gaming Inc. opted to build a new, integrated racing and gaming facility that won’t open until early 2008 rather than operate a temporary slots facility. When Penn National slots are operational, purses are expected to approach $200,000 a day under a year-round racing schedule. The racetrack operators, which keep 45% of adjusted gross revenue from slots, collected the following from Jan. 1 through mid-March: Philly Park ($24.9 million), Chester Downs ($23.5 million), Pocono Downs ($18.9 million), and Presque Isle ($7.2 million).
March 18,2007: Out Of Place's millionaire son, Nightmare Affair headed for Dubai
Nightmare Affair, a millionaire who was third in the 2006 Breeders Cup Sprint, is by Out Of Place o/o the Black Tie Affair mare, Beaux Arts Ball. Nightmare Affair is being trained by his owner, Gary Marano, at Palm Meadows. "Basically we wanted to center our main operation up to New York beginning this spring, which was the reason I've taken over training the horses we had in Florida with Manny Azpurua," said Marano. "I go way back with Kiaran McLaughlin. I'm in his barn and he's kind of been guiding me along and supervising the path to Dubai. Who better to know the ins and outs and intricacies of racing in Dubai than Kiaran." Marano began in the business as an assistant with trainer Butch Lenzini and had a trainer's license from 1990 through 1995. He said one edge he may have in the Golden Shaheen is that horses are not allowed to race on Lasix in Dubai. "Nightmare Affair has never run on Lasix, so that should be an edge for us, as well as the straightaway run, since he's a come-from-behind horse who has had problems at times either getting stopped or losing a lot of ground around the turn," said Marano. "I've been around this horse for the last four years, I know him inside and out, and right now he's doing about as well as he ever has."
Jan 07, 2007 Aqueduct - Off to a Great Start for the NEW YEAR...Paraneck Stables ( who own Song Of The Sword & Lord Ofthe Thunder) wins 2 stakes races at Aqueduct this weekend!!!
Golden Dreamer secured the rail position and carried jockey Norberto Arroyo Jr. to an easy 3¾-length victory over Special Dream in the 30th running of the $69,265 Ruthless at Aqueduct racetrack on Sunday afternoon. The win in the contest for three-year-old fillies at six furlongs gave Paraneck Stable a sweep of Aqueduct racetrack's inner track stakes offerings on the weekend. As can be recalled, Paraneck won Saturday's Count Fleet with Pink Viper. Favored by the crowd of 3,404, Golden Dreamer set splits of :21.98; :44.99 and :57.31 and strolled to victory in 1:10.26. A New York-bred daughter of Malabar Gold, Golden Dreamer returned $4.90 as she improved her record to five wins from four starts. Her lone loss was sixth-place finish on New York Showcase Day at Belmont Park last October 21st in the one-mile Maid of the Mist. “She's a classy filly,” said Ernie Paragallo, authorized agent for Paraneck Stable. “She'll do whatever you want. She can go to the lead or come from behind. She's as professional as they come. She'll stretch out. We rushed her into the (Maid of the Mist) going a mile, but there was too much speed in there. We'll see how she comes out and go from there.”
Jan 06, 2007- Aqueduct Parancek Stables wins Count Fleet Stakes with Pink Viper...
Pink Viper delivered a surprise as he held off 6-5 favorite Johannesburg Star to win the 32nd running of the $70,865 Count Fleet for three-year-olds at 1 mile and 70 yards on the inner dirt track of Aqueduct racetrack. Saturday, Johannesburg Star made a rallying move on the turn under jockey C. C. Lopez and caught up to Pink Viper and jockey Norberto Arroyo Jr., who had dueled longshot Here to Please on the fast track through fractions of :23.55; :47.04; 1:11 95 and 1:38.38. The battle was joined on Aqueduct's inner track, an Pink Viper dug in on the rail and never let the favorite pass, as he won by a length and a quarter in 1:42.94. A son of Smoke Glacken, Pink Viper returned $18.40 for his second win in 11 career starts. Sir Whimsey was a length back in third, and a neck back in fourth was No Reply. Believeinmenow and Here to Please trailed. “He trained the same way he trained going into his last race,” said Ernie Paragallo, authorized agent for Paraneck Stable, owner of Pink Viper. “Except, in the last race, C.C. (Lopez) said he didn't want to run three steps. He has to be in the race; when he's in the race, he's aggressive. I knew there was a lot of speed, but I told Norberto (Arroyo) not to give up his position. I told him when he parked these horses, they were going to lose heart. Half of them lost heart and didn't want to run. This horse is a tough sucker when he is in a dogfight. We'll see how he is tomorrow. We don't know what we're going to do with him.” Arroyo who picked up the winning ride when Lopez was committed to Johannesburg Star, said: “I had enough horse to fight him. He felt good warming up. With all the speed that was in the race, I had the rail. I thought I would let everybody go. Ernie (Paragallo) told me to come out of there running; I feel he won the race. He gets all the credit.”
